Emilia - 1 Month

To stick with all the cliches, I have to acknowledge how fast time is going. I can't believe it's been a month since Emilia came into our lives. In some senses it feels like she's always been here, and sometimes I look at her and think, "Who are you?!"

Weight: 10lb 2.1oz (75th percentile) - up 2lb 12.1oz since birth
Height: 52cm at last midwife appointment last week

Likes:
  • Diaper changes. I know... what newborn likes diaper changes?
  • Staring at faces. Yup. Newborns are super exciting (not!)
  • Being swaddled. We use a swaddle sleepsack at night and she sleeps great with it.

Dislikes:
  • Being put down when she's over-tired.
  • The soother. She has refused soothers since the day she was born. They are downright offensive!

Notes:
  • She's wearing 0-3 and 3 month clothing, depending on the brand
  • We have started simple sleep training. Essentially trying to get her to go to sleep on her own. I'm not strict with it. I still enjoy the newborn snuggles when I have time for them, but she takes a couple naps a day in her bassinet, being put down awake. She's only up for an hour at a time before she gets over-tired and has a really hard time falling asleep.
  • She won't stay asleep in the car seat once we stop driving. Even if she's passed right out for 30 minutes in the seat. As soon as we take her out she wakes up! Ah!
  • She will take a bottle. We try to do one 1-3 times per week. She drinks 2.5-3 oz. at a time.
  • She passed her hearing test!
  • She has already started smiling and cooing. Babies typically don't start these behaviors until 6-8 weeks, but she started smiling at 3 weeks, and cooing between 3 and 4. She has lots of alert time, and seems really focused on the thing going on around her.
  • She has a lip tie which looks pretty bad to me. It doesn't affect her nursing at all, and she's gaining lots of weight, so I don't think we'll worry about it unless it causes issues in the future. Better start saving for orthodontic treatments for our kids! Between her lip tie and Dom's finger sucking!
  • She usually takes 4 naps per day, and is up 2 times at night to feed. She's a super quick feeder which is amazing.
  • She has had a goopy eye since she was born, but the midwives don't seem concerned about it.
The schedule we try to follow: (Thanks Desiree!)
0630: Wake up & Feed
0730-0930: Nap 1
0930: Feed
1030-1230: Nap 2
1230: Feed
130-330: Nap 3
330: Feed
430-630: Nap 4
730: Bed
945ish: Dream Feed
1015ish: Bassinet and asleep for the night. Feeding on demand.

And here she is at 1 week for comparison!
